NIOSH 582 Equivalency Course Announcement
Health Science Associates' NIOSH 582 equivalency course is listed as an AIHA Registry Programs LLC reviewed NIOSH 582 Equivalent course on the web listing at AIHA Registries. AIHA Registry Programs, LLC has determined that Health Science Associates course meets the requirements detailed in the AIHA Registry Programs NIOSH 582 Equivalency Course Requirements for Listing document and is considered by the AIHA Registry Programs, LLC to be equivalent to the NIOSH 582 course. Classes are scheduled for April 23-26, 2018 and October 22-25, 2018. Seats will fill up fast so contact our office now to register!

Jaime was recently appointed to the Analytical Accreditation Board for the American Industrial Hygiene Association Laboratory Accreditation Program (AIHA-LAP). The Analytical Accreditation Board oversees the governance and processes related to the AIHA-LAP, and have authority for AIHA-LAP accreditation decision making. This responsibility includes: approval, denial, suspension or withdrawal of accreditation. Members must vote on proposed revisions to AIHA-LAP, LLC policies. As a former laboratory director of an AIHA accredited laboratory, this position will keep her in touch with her chemist roots.
Joel Berman continues his work on the AIHA Stewardship and Sustainability committee. The Stewardship and Sustainability Committee, established in 1984 as the Product Safety Committee, provides a bridge between AIHA members, and businesses; workers; government; and the community, to meet the health, safety, and environmental needs of present generations without compromising the needs of future generations. Through education, and the development of training, communication, and resource tools, the committee enables the AIHA membership to utilize sustainability and stewardship models to balance the financial, social, and environmental objectives of the organization.
Joel is also the government affairs officer for the Orange County Local Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (OC AIHA) serving as a board member of the California Industrial Hygiene Council (CIHC) on their behalf. The California Industrial Hygiene Council was founded in 1990 to establish a legislative presence in the California State Capitol for the industrial hygiene profession. It is supported by the local sections of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) within California.

Ron Collingwood, an REHS on our staff, will be working under our Senior REHS with over 40 years of experience. A REHS works to improve the quality of life and health through environmental education, consultation, and enforcement. Some typical responsibilities include food production safety programs, program compliance review, land use, recreational swimming programs, waste water, onsite sewage disposal, drinking water, housing, vector control, disaster sanitation, and solid waste and hazardous materials management.
We are also excited to announce that Devin Berman, one of our Industrial Hygienists, has passed the Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) exams. With 6 CACs on staff we can be even more flexible responding to our clients needs.
Jaime Steedman-Lyde, CIH has passed her LEED Accredited Professional (AP) exam advancing HSA's understanding of green buildings and LEED credit requirements. This will enhance our work on commissioning teams and testing for Indoor Environmental Quality credits.

HSA sponsored the 7th Annual A/E/C MAKE THE CONNECTION: Cocktails, Conversation, & Charity, July 23rd at the Autodesk Gallery in San Francisco, California.
Make the Connection is an Annual Mixer that brings together professionals from the architectural, construction, engineering, facility management, green building, interior design and marketing communities in Northern California for an evening of conversation and cocktails. Presented by AIA SF, AIA East Bay, SMPS, IFMA, IIDA, RECON, AEBL, Drinks By Design.
Each year the proceeds from the Make the Connection event benefit a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the Architecture, Engineering or Construction industry. This year, the 2015 beneficiary is the Cypress Mandela Training Center, Inc. Located in Oakland, CA, the Cypress Mandela Training Center offers a free 16-week pre-apprenticeship program for Bay Area men and women over 18 years old. Training is both hands-on and in the classroom, and prepares students for skilled trade jobs that are relevant to today's construction industry. Students have the opportunity to earn college credits from UC Berkeley, UC Davis, or Laney College. In the past two years, over 85% of the graduates were placed in jobs.

As of January 2014, Joel I. Berman has taken on the role of Government Affairs Director for the Orange County Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (OCAIHA). As the Government Affairs Director, Joel will now also be one of the representatives on the board of the California Industrial Hygiene Council (CIHC). The CIHC was established in 1990 to provide the Industrial Hygiene community with a legislative presence in the State of California. Joel is excited about joining this important board and representing his profession in our state.

Dec 2011 - Howard B. Spielman presented with two honors
Howard B. Spielman, our President and Founder, was presented with two honors at the recent CIHC Conference. CIHC presented Howard with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his Outstanding Leadership and Support of the California Industrial Hygiene Council. The California State Senate further honored him with State Senate Resolution 2343 which recognizes Mr. Spielman as a pioneer in the Industrial Hygiene industry.

The acquisition includes a complete transfer of all lab equipment, instruments, supplies, lab facilities, accreditations / certifications and key laboratory personnel. HSA was conceived originally to specialize in the industrial hygiene/occupational health field. It continues to provide the highest degree of competence, experience and services available in this field today. However, it quickly became apparent that occupational health and occupational safety were inseparable issues in the workplace and that an integrated approach was essential. Therefore, HSA offers the full scope of occupational health and safety technical, training and advisory services consistent with CAL/OSHA and Federal OSHA requirements.
